About This Project

The Zone was a sports magazine focusing on hockey created over the course of a semester for a Publication class at Moravian College. It started as a two page spread, Slap Shot Decoded, for the SPD contest in 2017. I am extremely passionate about hockey and wanted to make a magazine that was different from every other sports magazine out there. I started by doing research and creating mood-boards for the colors, typography, and format. From these, I saw the typical sports editorial patterns. While I did want to keep my magazine sporty, I wanted to steer away from the overly used motifs.

So, rather than having The Zone being overly masculine and brutish, I tried to get it to look like something that would appeal to both males and females alike.  This meant using dark grey and yellow instead of the typical blue and red, and really focusing on the typography and making it look sleek rather than in your face. I did use an italicized sans serif to make the articles and magazine seem dynamic and like they have motion rather than a font that would feel stagnant, but I tried to steer clear of an overly bold, yelling, style of font.

I felt like this was a magazine that both reflected the feeling of hockey as well as my own personal style.
